Sega Dreamcast

Sega Dreamcast

The Dreamcast is a sixth generation video game console which was released by Sega in late 1998 in Japan and from September 1999 in other territories. It was the first entry in the sixth generation of video game consoles, preceding Sony's PlayStation 2, Microsoft's Xbox and the Nintendo GameCube.

Dreamcast sales were positive during launch, but because of the strong pressure from rival Sony which released the PlayStation 2, the Dreamcast lost much momentum. When the Xbox and GameCube were announced, Sega came to the realization that it did not have the resources to compete and discontinued the Dreamcast in March 2001 which marked its withdrawal from the console hardware business, making it the company's final console. Support of the system continued in Europe and Oceania until the end of 2002, while in Japan, consoles were still sold until 2007 and new licensed games continued to be released. 10.6 million units were sold worldwide, as of 2002.

Despite its short lifespan, the Dreamcast has garnered cult status for its history and features. It saw the release of many new game series which have been considered creative and innovative, such as Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, and Shenmue. The console itself was widely hailed as ahead of its time, and is still held in high regard for pioneering online console gaming; it was the first console to include a built-in modem and Internet support for online play. To date, the console is still supported through various MIL-CD independent

Android dreamcast development

Very slow progress as the first info and video's on this emulator came out Dec 2010.  However recently (summer of 2012), there has been some developments and the developer has posted some new videos and the APK of a previous version has been leaked.  This emulator for Android is a direct port of NullDCe from the PC, so it's safe to assume that this will just become NullDCe Android Edition when it is finished.  It isn't even in an Alpha stage yet but the leaked APK means that other people like Paul Lamb, who developed Mupen64 for Android might have a go at creating the port themselves.

The leaked APK is available to download but just to warn you that it isn't very stable at the moment, no audio works at all and there is no key mapping options.  So if you wanted to play this on Xperia PLAY and have the controls work, then you have to do it the long way round using Gamekeyboard controller.

Being the geeks we are though, we are doing our own video of the first button mapped Dreamcast emulator.  This shoudl be up soon and we'll post it here ofcourse for your entertainment.
