So the first real update is out for the entire Xperia range, including the Xperia PLAY and anyone will love the touches they have done. Consider the Xperia PLAY even cooler with this new software package.
So from my findings there is 4 real noticeable functions and features that have been added in this update. So first of all the big update that Sony Ericsson are shouting about is their Facebook Inside software., then there is the landscape UI & home screen and a few little improvements like better split screen email and Calendar.
I don't think I have to explain what Facebook is but they promise that users of Facebook will have never seen integration like this on any other device. Once you are logged into your Facebook account, the handset will automatically sync with your profile and add it’s content straight to your phone. This includes all of your photos and albums synched to your Gallery, all of your friends birthdays sync’d to your Calendar and of course the contact integration. It also offers some unique touches that a far as I know you can’t get anywhere else. Firstly are the direct push notifications to your handset lock screen, so even before you have unlocked your device you can see if you have any FB notifications. Then there is the media integration, you can like music direct from your player and you can see everyone else’s recommendations in the Media Discovery app & Widget. Watch the below video for more detail.
Split screen Calendar & Email
You will also find the calendar app has been improved to offer a better split screen layout when in portrait. It is a small touch but none the less one for the better and I enjoy using the calendar more since this update. You will also find this new improved portrait view in the email application too.
3Landscape UI & Homescreen
One update that is more for the PLAY customers is the landscape home screen orientation when the gamepad is open. Not going to lie, before when it didn’t do this… it frustrated the hell out of me and I am uber happy that they have fixed this. This means that you can completely browse the home screen and apps menu by using the D Pad and action buttons.
Then everyone’s favourite by a long shot is the TV shut off lock screen J. It is such a simple touch but oh dear god it looks so cool. Remember the old tube TV’s when you switched them off they had a white line that shrunk into nothing, that is exactly how the new lock screen looks. This was actually a standard Gingerbread feature and the only other brand to sport this currently is the Goggle Nexus S and by the looks of things no one else has plans to implement it.
The update is available via a simple over the air update, which can be completed via 3G or Wi-Fi. To check this on your device, just go to:
Settings> About Phone> Software Update
You can if you prefer do the update via the PC Companion software or using the old school Sony Ericsson Update Software (my favourite method)
