Playstation Mobile Announced

Playstation Certified has now become Playstation Mobile & officially open to Non Sony devices.

So Sony this week have been making some announcements at E3 and one of them is about changes to Playstation Certified.  Well the fact is, it's now completely changed.  Playstation Mobile is the new brand and direction for the Playstation experience.  Sony will deny that's the case but we all now it needs a boost. :)

They also make it clear that the Playstation Mobile is more focused on delivering new content developed on the Playstation Suite SDK, instead of just delivering Playstation Classics.  Which is again, slightly confusing because I thought that was the point.  Perhaps Sony have had far too many headaches getting the correct rights to actually deliver some of the classic PS titles. I mean, we've been covering the PS Store for Xperia since day dot and after 1 year, we still only have 20 - 30 games.  Most of those games do show their considerably.  Perhaps delivering classics will be more of a focus for the studios to re-release for Android like Rockstar or Sega have done.

The whole environment is getting a lot more attention now also due to the PS Vita too.  I think it's too early to say whether or not that games made for the Vita will be playable on Playstation Mobile devices.  From what I have read and seen, I think this is the intention.  Will this mean that games designed for the controller of the Vita will then also work on the Xperia PLAY?  Again, unsure at this time but we flaming well hope so.

The other news is that they are showing off the newer improved Playstation Mobile performance on HTC phones.  Yep, you read right... HTC!  Well the HTC one series to be preicse; HTC One X, S and possibly V too.  We reported on this rumor back before Mobile World Congress and we asked you what you though of it then.  Even now, I see both the benefits and the negatives.  Let's face it though, ultimately the more people who can buy PS Mobile games, the more games and content that will be made.  Sony have won format battles before, like Mini-Disc and Blu-Ray.  Perhaps this could turn out to be another one of those stories.

We can't be upset about this decision because the Playstation Mobile experience as it stands isn't amazing.  Well, we love it.  That's one of the many reasons why we started this website.  Especially playing the classic Driver using HDMI out on Xperia S whilst using a PS controller.  It's the nuts!  So if the platform has to be made available to other manufacturers for it to take off, then that positive way overpowers any skeptics.

Here's a thought for you.  What if PS Mobile really takes off and becomes available for all tablets and portable devices going forward.  Imagine seeing it on an iPad or a Windows mobile?  Perhaps just like Microsoft's recent announcement of official Office for Android & iOS, Playstation is a key service which should be available to all mobile users despite their hardware.  Sony will just have to find new ways of making their hardware more desirable to consumers, rather than relying on proprietary software or services.
